Carrier network deployment case study

National Carrier Network Expansion — 1,200 Cell Sites

Between Q2 2023 and Q1 2024, Vertiv designed, manufactured, and shipped 1,200 NEBS Level 3 outdoor cabinets for a Tier-1 carrier's 5G densification program spanning 6 states in the southeastern United States. The project required cabinets in three form factors — ground-mount (60%), wall-mount (25%), and pole-mount (15%) — each pre-integrated with 48V DC power distribution, active thermal management rated for 3,500W heat load, and seismic Zone 4 bracing.

The deployment was phased over 18 months to align with the provider's compute capacity expansion schedule, with initial occupancy of 200 racks in Hall A followed by three subsequent phases.

Each custom 48U rack (1200mm depth, 800kg static load rating) included factory-integrated vertical cable managers, overhead fiber tray brackets, and busway tap-off provisions. The standardized mounting interface reduced per-rack installation time to 45 minutes versus the industry average of 90-120 minutes for comparable configurations.
